Posted by Howard on Nov 13, 2009 in Supplements • 3 commentsMuch has been written about Acai Berry but are there worries about the Acai Berry side effects and health issues? There have been claims about acai berry as part of a diet for weight loss, a cleanse detox plus countless other benefits.
Pronounced “ah-sigh-EE”, the acai berry is a fruit that grows only in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. The crop is produced twice a year from the large acai palm tree in Brazil, Peru, Central and South America. The acai tree is fast growing, making it the most important plant species in the Amazon region of Brazil, since it makes up to 42% of their total diet. The acai berry has served as a food source for the people of the Amazon rainforest for hundreds of years. It was only in recent years that researchers have discovered the unique nutritional properties of this rare, exotic fruit.

The berry is now the center of attention for many health enthusiasts especially those who are very health and figure conscious because it is said that the berries have actually weight loss properties. But researchers state that these claims are yet to be approved.
The acai berry, rich in antioxidants and nutrients, is a dark purple fruit, almost like blueberries. It is approximately 1 inch in diamater with a large seed in the center. However, despite the seed, the acai berry tastes like a cross between a bowl of berries and rich chocolate. The juice and pulp of the acai fruits are used in smoothies, juice blends, and other beverages. The berries can be mixed with granola, or be made into muffins, or even top off ice cream.
Many other benefits are claimed such as decreasing the incidence of prostate gland enlargement, enhancing the function of the immune system with the help of the antioxidants like the vitamin C; it also improves bowel functioning due to the fact that its fiber content is really high, decreases the incidence of blood clots which may possibly cause myocardial infarction or maybe heart attack, decreases or regulates the blood cholesterol levels as well as the blood sugar levels, and it improves mental capacity which include thinking and concentration.
Are Acai Berry supplements safe?
To a certain degree they are. The only arguable element about this supplement is numerous examinations and studies have found that the Acai’s medical claims are inconsistent and not wholly correct.
For example, the statement that the anti-oxidants in Acai Berry can help decrease the aging process, prevent cancer and reduce heart problems. In studies done by the University College of London, the John Hopkins School of Medicine and Copenhagen researchers, found that each one of these claims were found to be false and contrary and more importantly – where in fact they could cause the opposite effect. Does Acai Berry may have side effects? Acai should not have side effects unless used in excessive amounts.
