Truthfully, there is no substitute for whole mineral and whole vitamin complexes that come from whole foods. Synthetic (refined down to its chemical shell--even if they started out as the whole food) imposters such as those made and used in every PowerBar product will ultimately create imbalances in the body. Sure, there may be a short-term effects just like those caused by a drug, but these synthetic compounds do nothing to provide the energy, vitamin, and mineral complexes that the body actually uses and needs. Study after study using whole-food complex vitamins continually show benefit while study after study using synthetic versions have very mixed results--some of them are negative results, adverse effects, and other side effects. Important to know the difference and I hope that more companies will return to making whole food concentrates, especially for athletes.
