You’ll discover that there are three primary types of dairy allergyin infants. First of all there is the full blown allergy to cows milk which is relatively easy to recognize. Secondly we have a lactose intolerance and thirdly, a milk protein intolerance. Trying to identify which type of milk allergy a child has can be tricky.

Lactose Intolerance (Common)

When your young baby cannot digest lactose, which is the sugar in cows milk, milk products (from any animal) and breast milk this is known as a lactose intolerance. The symptoms include, vomiting up whole feeds within a short time after feeding, green stools, intense tummy pain and not gaining weight. This will more than likely be picked up quickly by your health visitor because any baby not gaining weight will be a worry. Most babies grow out this intolerance within a few months, as the body starts producing more lactase.

Real Allergy to Cows Milk (Rare)

A second type of allergy, in fact a real allergy to cow’s milk, is caused when the childs body treats the substance as harmful which is what happens in other allergies such as a peanut allergy. When a full blown allergy is present, the symptoms are unmistakable and include vomiting, hives, anaphylaxis and swelling of the lips, mouth and throat. With severe reactions, call emergency services without delay.

The types of intolerance or allergy described above tend to have immediate reactions. The food is ingested, and within minutes the body rejects it though vomiting.

Milk Protein Intolerance (Common)

What’s harder to determine is a dairy or milk protein intolerance in babies. Milk protein intolerances are usually subject to a delayed response of up to 4 days, so they can be very hard to spot. Also, your baby will most likely be putting on weight normally. Symptoms can include: colic, stomach pain, flatulence, unsettled, crying fits, excessive wind, trouble sleeping, reflux and eczema.

If your child constantly shows signs of these symptoms it is definitely worth discussing it with your doctor, midwife or health visitor about trying a dairy free diet for a few weeks or, if you are breast feeding, simply cutting out dairy products from your diet for 2 weeks. It often takes up to a week before you notice any difference in your child, as it can take a while for all the dairy to be removed by the body.

Many children grow out of milk allergies and intolerances and it’s nothing to be alarmed about. There’s no need to be concerned if your baby doesn’t out grow their intolerance to milk as there are plenty of alternatives such as soya, rice or goats milk.

Ever wonder what exactly is involved when taking an allergy test? It’s ok, nothing to be afraid of. Testing for allergies is quite easy really. A quick test measures exactly what reaction a person may have to a certain set of allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander, mold, various types of medication and foods such as peanuts.

Basically, there are two known types of allergy tests that are proven to be highly effective. You can have a skin test, which involves a slight prick on your skin, or RAST, which is otherwise known as radioallergosorbent testing, where blood samples are checked.

The evaluation usually happens in a doctor’s office or a medical lab. An allergist is a person who do not have a full training and certification to formally test you – so be mindful! There are some allergy skin testing practioners out there who are not properly qualified.

Skin testing has made its name in the forefront of allergy testing. It’s been in use now for more than a 100 years and it continues to be the preferred test of choice. The test will begin with a small scratch, prick or shallow puncture.

After that, a tiny drop of liquid containing the allergen to be tested is placed on top of the cut. Contrary to what you may be thinking, this doesn’t really hurt at all. The cut is far too microscopic to be the cause of any pain. The needle used barely scratches the surface of the skin and it is rare that you will have any evident bleeding.

After the allergen solution has been applied, the skin usually requires about 10-15 minutes to allow for any possible reaction. A positive skin test result is indicated by an itchy red or pink bump that starts to form that looks a little like the reaction you would get from a bug bite.

If you get a positive result, this shows that you have an allergic antibody to the specimen that was tested. What that means is that you are probably going to experience some allergy symptoms in relation to that specific substance.

This positive result doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re allergic. After you see the red bump formation, the test will then be followed up by comparing to two other tests with the same allergen as the first, alongside a negative control, such as saltwater and a positive control, a histamine. You will then need to wait to see what, if any, reactions to these two are. These two additional tests are put there to ensure you aren’t simply reacting to the pricking of the needle itself.

If your test results turn out to be negative, even though your history of allergic reactions predict that you should be allergic, you will receive another test. This test is named intradermal skin testing.

This involves the injection of a highly diluted allergen under the top layer of the skin. They perform this using a tiny needle that doesn’t really cause any pain. This can be done for all kinds of allergies including an allergy test for joint pain in cases where you are suffering from an allergy in this part of the body.

Both types of skin test are associated with allergic reactions on a small scale which is helpful in preparing people for the more pronounced reactions in common allergies and symptoms. It provides you with some idea of the look and feel of the allergic reaction so you know how to identify whether you’re having an allergic reaction or if it’s simply an insect bite of some kind. The test also lets you know more precisely what to avoid, whether it is pollen, peanuts, cats, dogs, dust or mold and so on).

Knowing what allergy testing involves will help you prepare more easily for and be less scared of what it is all about. Many people avoid testing because they are afraid about what it involves but the relief they can get from allergy symptoms once they’re informed can really make up for that. This indeed is a sure way to successful allergies relief.

It seems like asthma is becoming ever more prevalent these days. No doubt you’ve heard about it. But unless you actually suffer from the problem, you might not know what actually transpires during an asthma attack. If you’ve just been diagnosed with the condition, here are some facts you should know.

Symptoms of an asthma attack include shortness of breath, coughing and a wheezing or whistling sound in your chest. It’s a serious situation, and can lead to death if untreated.

What causes an asthma attack? It’s different for everyone. Some of the most common triggers are allergens such as dust, pollution, pollen, cigarette smoke and perfume. Indeed, many attacks are actually caused by allergy induced asthma. There are also other factors that can set off an asthma attack, including exercise, cold air, pressure changes, and viral infections.

An asthma attack takes place within the air passage to your lungs. There’s a muscle located outside the airway that controls when it opens and closes. It’s completely reflexive, so you can’t control it voluntarily. But allergens or the other factors that were pointed out above can cause it to constrict. If you suffer from asthma, the muscle tends to overreact to the irritants, and you’ll experience an asthma attack.

When the muscle tightens, the airway narrows. As well, a build up of mucus takes place, and at the same time the lining becomes inflamed and starts to swell. The presence of mucus in the air passages is completely normal, because it helps the flow of air from the lungs. However, during an asthma attack, mucus production increases considerably, and it clogs the airway.

It’s hard to breathe when this accumulation of mucus is present. As long as the excess mucus is in place, the asthma attack won’t stop. That’s why it’s so important to treat your symptoms immediately with a prescribed medication.

Sometimes an attack will last just a few minutes. However, a severe attack can last for hours or even days. You might experience a period of time without symptoms, but without proper treatment they’ll be back.

If you suspect you might have asthma, it’s essential that you visit your doctor immediately. Tests will be run in order to make an accurate diagnosis. They will also try to pinpoint the cause of your attacks. When you’ve established the factors that trigger your attacks, it’s critical that you do your best to avoid them. In order to avoid asthma attacks in the future, close medical supervision and a strong commitment to using the proper asthma remedies are essential. The attacks can be deadly, so don’t ignore your symptoms.

Allergy asthma is a common affliction for people in the USA. Even though it can be a horrible problem to have, many people take comfort from the vast range of treatments available, due to the large amount of people that suffer from it. Its the most prevelant type of asthma in the mainland USA, and the world for that matter. Asthma bought on by allergies and symptoms of allergies can happen in the cleanest of homes, and often attacks are bought on by environments outside the home.

The issue lies with what triggers your allergy because this is often the trigger for the asthma as well. The two often go hand in hand, and this is what makes allergy asthma so very common. Take a look at a common example below, and you can see why allergy asthma is so apparant:

Many people are allergic to animals and pets, without even sometimes showing obvious symptoms. Allergy asthma from animals can be triggerd by something as simple and innocent as being around a pet, and this may trigger the allergy which will start the airway to become inflamed, the result of which is allergy asthma and a high chance of an asthma attack.

Other common triggers that asthmatics encounter in day to day life, include things such as airborne irritants like ciggerette smoke or pollen. Often, these such triggers are hard to avoid and when encountered, can lead to rapid and hard to treat reactions.

Some people even suffer from allergy asthma that is triggered by skin afflictions from chemicals, liquids or even foods like peanuts or shellfish. Doctors are not really sure why these reactions cause allergy asthma attacks, but it certainly has prompted years of research.

My full article on allergy asthma has alot more information, and I can help you control allergy asthma, by providing you with some great allergy asthma avoidance tips and secrets.
